The NFL wild card format has been the same since the 2020 season: fourteen teams reach the playoffs, seven from each conference, and twelve of them play on Wild Card Weekend. The 2026 season is the seventh straight year under this format.
Qualifying and seeding
Each conference sends seven teams:
- Seeds 1–4 are the four division champions, ordered by overall won-lost-tied record. The division winner with the best record is the No. 1 seed; the other three are seeded 2, 3 and 4 by record.
- Seeds 5–7 are the three teams with the best overall records among the clubs that did not win a division. These are the wild card teams.
A division champion is always seeded ahead of a wild card team, even if a wild card team finished with a better record. Teams with identical records are separated by the NFL tiebreaking procedures, not by a playoff game.
The wild card matchups
The No. 1 seed in each conference receives a first-round bye. The remaining six teams per conference meet in three games:
| Game | Host | Visitor |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | No. 2 seed (division winner) | No. 7 seed (wild card) |
| 2 | No. 3 seed (division winner) | No. 6 seed (wild card) |
| 3 | No. 4 seed (division winner) | No. 5 seed (wild card) |
Every game is single elimination; the loser’s season ends. There is no restriction on division rivals meeting, so two teams from the same division can play each other in this round.
What happens next
The NFL reseeds after each round rather than using a fixed bracket. In the divisional round the lowest-seeded surviving team travels to the No. 1 seed, and the other two wild card winners play each other at the home of the higher seed. The conference championship game is hosted by the higher remaining seed. Only the Super Bowl is played at a neutral site.
How the format got here
The first round was called the wild card round when the league moved to ten playoff teams in 1978. A third wild card team per conference was added in 1990, which demoted the lowest-seeded division winner into the round as a home team, and the current fourteen-team field arrived in 2020. For the first four seasons of the fourteen-team era the league branded the round “Super Wild Card Weekend.” More detail is on the history of the NFL wild card round.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How many teams make the NFL playoffs?
Fourteen, seven from each conference: the four division winners seeded 1 to 4 and the three best remaining teams seeded 5, 6 and 7.
Which teams play in the NFL wild card round?
Twelve of the fourteen. The No. 2 seed hosts the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 hosts the No. 6 and the No. 4 hosts the No. 5 in each conference. The No. 1 seed has a bye.
Can a wild card team host a playoff game?
Not in this round. Wild card teams are seeded 5 to 7, so they always play on the road in the wild card round.
