Astros Wild Card Game: Houston's Four Trips to the Round

Houston’s wild card history, from the 2015 shutout at Yankee Stadium to the 2026 sweep by the White Sox and the 81-81 season that produced a No. 3 seed.

Houston has played in the wild card round four times, twice as the visiting team that advanced and twice as the host that went home. The most recent appearance, in 2026, produced one of the stranger entries in playoff record books.

The 81-81 season

The Astros clinched the AL West on September 27, 2026 — their eighth division title in ten years and their tenth postseason berth in twelve seasons — and finished 81–81. That made them the first division winner to reach the playoffs without a winning record, and the fourth team of any kind to do so after the 1981 Kansas City Royals, the 2020 Milwaukee Brewers and the 2020 Astros. Houston is the only franchise to have done it twice.

Under the MLB format the lowest-seeded division winner is locked into the No. 3 seed regardless of record, so Houston hosted the No. 6 seed Chicago White Sox (84–78) despite the three-game gap in the standings. The format is explained on the MLB wild card format page.

Chicago led 3–0 in the second inning of Game 1 and 5–0 by the fifth before Houston answered with a pinch-hit two-run home run. In Game 2 the White Sox batted through their entire order in the first inning and led 4–0 before the Astros came to bat; Houston then hit three solo home runs to close within 4–3 before a three-run homer in the sixth settled it.

The defeat was Houston’s ninth consecutive home postseason loss, a streak dating back to Game 2 of the 2023 Division Series, and it gave the White Sox their first playoff series win since the 2005 World Series — which also came against the Astros.
